Prolotherapy and Treatments What is Prolotherapy? Prolotherapy is a non-surgical approach to treatment of musculoskeletal pain. It involves an injection of a solution containing a local anesthetic and an irritant, such as dextrose. This solution produces an inflammatory response from your body in the injected area that in turn prompts your body to “heal” itself. Maximum benefit from prolotherapy may require multiple injections spaced weeks apart. However, pain relief can often be achieved after a single injection. Prolotherapy offers the advantage of being a “steroid free” injection; therefore, it does not possess the side effects normally associated with steroids. The term “prolotherapy” is derived from the term “proliferation” referring to the body’s ability to proliferate or grow new tissue to heal itself.
